The First Time I Saw Egypt by Dianne Noble

Today, in place of Five on Friday, I have Dianne Noble guest blogging about her book and her love of Egypt. Be sure and follow her on social media and check out her book, Oppression. And, always remember to leave a review for the books you read! They are soooooo important to authors!!

When she tries preventing the abduction and forced marriage of 16-year-old Layla, Beth defies her controlling husband, Duncan, and travels to Cairo where she finds the girl now living in the vast necropolis known as The City of the Dead. She’s hiding from her abusive husband and incites fellow Muslim women to rebel against the oppression under which they live. Beth identifies with this and begins helping her.
Cairo is in a state of political unrest, and Beth gets caught up in one of the many protests. She’s rescued by Harry, who splits his working life between Egypt and England, and they eventually fall in love. When Harry returns home and Layla vanishes, Beth is stalked and threatened with violence. And then Duncan turns up…
Can Beth ever find peace, or will her hopes of happiness remain shattered?
Will Layla’s ideals of freedom ever be fulfilled?

Excerpt

She woke in a fretful tangle of sheets, head thumping, hair plastered to her head, wet night shirt molded to her body. Where am I? Her gaze moved from the window to the puddle of discarded clothing and she remembered. Of course. Egypt. Leaning over the side of the bed to retrieve her slippers, she held them at arm’s length and shook them, then pulled them on and got out of bed.
Sitting on the toilet with her feet in the air, she kept a watchful eye on the floor tiles but there were no more insects to be seen.
The shower worked the first time. Maybe they turned the supply off at night because of water shortages. She let it run over her, washing away the stale perspiration and dirt, rubbed shampoo into her hair, rinsed it out and stood longer. How wonderful to be clean again. With a sigh of pleasure, she eventually turned off the water and looked around for the towels. There were none. She sighed. Looked like nothing was going to be simple. She dripped her way into the bedroom and dried herself on a couple of T-shirts.
By the time she’d dressed, sweat again bubbled out of every pore. Looked like she’d have to learn to live with the noisy A/C as well as permanent electric light. Her clothes smelt of mothballs after a night in the wardrobe. Pity they didn’t work for cockroaches. She looked in the small mirror over the basin and ran a comb through her hair. The lump on her temple had receded leaving a swirl of purple and yellow.
Right, almost ready for breakfast. Her stomach rumbled in agreement as she walked to the window. The shutters were stiff, the catch rusty, reluctant. Perhaps they weren’t meant to be opened but kept closed against the sun. With a small explosion of dust and rust flakes, she pushed them free and felt the heat on her face, smelt donkey dung as she looked down on the heads of a hundred people milling around, women in headscarves, men bareheaded, black hair gleaming in the sun.
She craned her neck to see small wooden shop fronts looking like cabinets with shelves. The noise was ferocious: people shouting, donkeys braying, a motorbike backfiring. Across the alley, on the roof of a narrow ochre-colored building, a woman pegged out washing, her small child playing perilously close to the unguarded edge. Beth’s arms prickled with heat as she watched until a triumphant bluebottle shot through a hole in the insect mesh and she quickly pulled the shutters closed, remembering just how many flies there were in Egypt. She’d have to buy a swat today.

 Dianne Noble

I was born into a service family and brought up in Singapore in the 1950s before it gained its independence, then Cyprus when the Turkish Navy sailed to the island for the first time to protect the interests of the Turkish Cypriots and we had to travel everywhere in a military convoy. I went on to marry a Civil Engineer and moved to the Arabian Gulf in the 1970s at the time of the construction boom. A hedonistic lifestyle with too much alcohol and partying which saw the demise of my, and many others’, marriages.
Since then, with sons grown and flown, I have continued to wander all over the world, keeping extensive journals of my experiences. Fifteen different schools and an employment history which included The British Embassy Bahrain, radio presenter, café proprietor on Penzance seafront, and a goods picker in an Argos warehouse (complete with steel toe-capped boots) have resulted in rich seams to mine for inspiration.
I’ve always written, from editing the school magazine to short stories and letters to magazines, but it was only on retirement that I had the time for a novel. My writing is atmospheric, steeped in the smells, sights, and sounds of exotic locations. I live – when not traveling – in a small, Leicestershire village. My favorite destinations – so far – have been India, Egypt, and Russia, with Guatemala a close third.

BLOG

The first time I saw Egypt I was seven years old and sitting on the deck of the troopship Dunera with my head buried in Enid Blyton’s Ring-o-Bells Mystery. I looked up when we docked in Port Said to see the gully-gully man. He was an Egyptian magician who fascinated everyone, young and old alike, and accentuated the other world atmosphere of this exotic country. As we sailed down the Suez Canal – much narrower than expected – Lawrence of Arabia figures seated on camels appeared on the desert banks. I can truly say Egypt was the first place interesting enough to get my head out of a book.

Three years later, in December, the Canal had been closed and we flew back from Singapore in an RAF Hermes plane. The journey took almost three days, stopping in several countries to refuel and de-ice the wings. This time there were no hot and vibrant sights and I didn’t see Egypt again until I reached my early forties, when I traveled by train from Cairo to Aswan, glued to the windows as we passed by villages which looked like they’d come straight from the pages of the Bible. My lifelong love affair with Egypt had begun and I’ve been back many times.

Thank you, Dianne, for sharing your personal story and your book, Oppression. Beautiful cover by the way!

Throw in a rookie deputy dead set on building his reputation and Harmony must tread carefully.
But caution isn’t Harmony’s middle name and she plunges head first into danger to defend her honor.
What she finds is a web of half-truths and suspicions implicating several law enforcement agencies, with Jake, her ex-lover, stuck in the middle of it all.

Five on Friday Questions

If you could snap your fingers and make one thing happen, what would it be and why?

Right now? Go a few days in the past, take the unwanted water from the Houston area and redirect it to Southwestern Oregon/ Northern California and dump it on the huge forest fires there. I used to live in the area and can only imagine the damage being done to the beauty of the forest and hills. (Let alone the people who have lost or are in danger of losing their homes.)

Ann: You’re very kind. As a Texan, I thank you for your good wishes. As devastating as Harvey was, Texans are tough and will survive with the help of all the support they’re receiving.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I’m pretty darn close right now, but I’d live in the mountains. I haven’t decided which mountains, and there are a lot to choose from. But give me a snow-covered peak and trees as far as the eye can see and a lake down the way and I’m happy. Granted, I will need internet access.

Ann: Don’t even get me started on internet service. I hate to rain on your parade, but except for the mountains, I have a lake out my back door, trees everywhere and just to load this post, I have to work between 2 and 8 a.m.!

Do you laugh at your own jokes?

I have a wry sense of humor. I think I’m funnier than other people do, so I try not to laugh at my own jokes in case they don’t.

Ann: Laughter is contagious. Just as much as a yawn. So go ahead and laugh at your jokes. Others will join in!

What is the loveliest thing you have ever seen?

A field of wildflowers (all colors and sizes) on the top of a mountain in early summer. Alternatively, the side of a mountain covered in golden-leafed aspens on a sunny day in the fall.

Ann: That sounds bee-u-ti-ful!! That’s the kind of scene I could just stare at all day.

How do you choose a title for your book?

I’m normally very bad at titles. But because I have two series, it’s easier. Each series has a running theme. The mystery series have titles based on jewelry, and the urban fantasy/paranormal romance series is based on chess. I’m not sure what will happen when I run out of types of jewelry before I run out of stories. I can’t imagine naming a book after a belly button stud.

Ann: You made me laugh! I bet others think you’re much funnier than you believe.

Kim McMahill, Five on Friday

Today, Kim McMahill shares the second book in her Risky Research Series. Please follow her on social media to get notice when she has new releases or special offers.

Kim McMahill grew up in Wyoming which is where she developed her sense of adventure and love of the outdoors. She started out writing non-fiction, but her passion for exotic world travel, outrageous adventures, stories of survival, and happily-ever-after endings soon drew her into a world of romantic suspense and adventure fiction. Along with writing novels Kim has also published over eighty travel and geographic articles, and contributed to a travel anthology and cookbook. Kim currently resides in Colorado, and when not writing, she enjoys gardening, traveling, hiking, and spending time with family

Morgan Hunter sacrificed everything for her career. She had yet to encounter anything she wasn’t willing to do to succeed…until now. When she uncovers evidence that the healthy foods she’s been hired to promote may be dangerous she must reevaluate her priorities. As questions mount and the body count rises, she finds herself caught in the crosshairs of an organization that will stop at nothing to hide its secrets and protect its profits. With no one else to trust, Morgan is forced to seek help from the man she drove away, but whom she never stopped loving.

This is the second book in the series, the first is titled, A Dose of Danger.

Five questions Kim chose to answer.

What is your favorite thing to do during your spare time…besides writing?
During the summer, I enjoy spending my free time gardening. I could easily fritter away an entire day out in the back yard tending my vegetables and flowers. I especially love the amazing variety of roses I acquired with the house.

Ann: At my house, my husband does the vegetable gardening, and I do the flowers. My favorite is zinnias because they need to be picked just about every day in order for them to keep blooming. So, during the summer months, I have at least one bouquet in the house all the time, usually two.

How do you think your life experiences have prepared you for writing?
I travel whenever and where ever I can which has provided me with an endless supply of settings for my stories. Probably the most fodder, though, has come from my childhood. I grew up in the country and horses were a huge part of our family life. We recreated in the mountains as a family and had some interesting, and at times, harrowing adventures that often sneak into my stories.

Ann: I think it is almost impossible for an author to write without including some of their own life experiences. I embellish them a bit, but still, like you, many of my scenes come from childhood memories.

What genre is your favorite to read?
I read, write, and watch adventure and suspense. I love stories of survival against the odds and being taken on adventures and journeys outside the comfort zone of my day-to-day life.

Ann: I also prefer to read books written in the same genre I write. As an author, I find it helpful to see how other writers start sentences, transition from one scene to the next, introduce their characters, etc.

What is one of your favorite quotes?
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” Mark Twain – Innocents Abroad

Ann: Well, you can never go wrong quoting Mark Twain!

What’s next for you? Any upcoming releases we should be looking out for?
The third novel in the Risky Research Series, A Foundation of Fear, is under contract with Pelican Book Group. It has gone through its first round of edits, but I don’t have a release date yet, so I hope readers will check out one of my social media links below to follow its progress. In the meantime, here’s a little bit about the book.

FBI Special Agent Devyn Nash is obsessed with taking down Coterie, a deadly group out to control the multi-billion-dollar-a-year diet-product industry. The FBI’s plan to expose Coterie places Devyn’s best friend and her partner’s fiancé in the crosshairs of this ruthless organization. Can Devyn protect her friend and bring the cold-blooded killers to justice before they strike again while distracted by injury, a sexist bully, and a long-distance relationship with a handsome Wyoming sheriff?

Ann: The series sounds interesting. Thanks for sharing your work with my readers!

Five on Friday with Harlequin Romance Author Barbara White Daille

Once again, I welcome Barbara White Daille to my blog. Today, she’s taking part in Five on Friday. Be sure and check out her books and follow her on social media. Also, the featured book today is ON SALE for .99 cents! If you’ve not read Barbara’s work, this is the perfect time to try it!!

What makes you laugh?
So many people and things. My husband. Kids. Big-footed, floppy-eared puppies. Clowns. Corny jokes. Clever puns and plays on words. Some snark and sarcasm, as long as it’s not too mean-spirited. Televisions shows such as “The Big Bang Theory,” “How I Met Your Mother,” and “I Love Lucy.” Newspaper comics such as Maxine, Family Circus, Dennis the Menace, Marmaduke, and Pickles, etc. Many, many comedians, including but in no way limited to Lucille Ball, Eddie Murphy, Carol Burnett, Ellen DeGeneres, Jerry Lewis, Jerry Seinfeld, the Marx Brothers, and more. The lists could just go on forever.

Ann: Right there with you, Barbara. Nothing boosts the spirit like a good laugh, ever if it’s at my own expense!

What’s your favorite dessert?
This is a tough one since dessert’s my favorite meal. LOL Honestly, I can’t pick just one. But I’ll narrow it down to chocolate. Chocolate cake… Chocolate brownies… Chocolate cookies…

Ann: Yep. Who doesn’t like chocolate?

Do you ever write naked?
Um-m-m…well…technically, you could say I do! Many writers will tell you they get some of their best ideas in the shower. That’s often the case with me, too. There’s nothing more exciting than that first burst of inspiration when the words begin flowing inside my head just as fast as the shower water is flowing, and I can’t wait to get them down on paper.

Ann: Well, not many people choose to answer this question! So glad you did. Most of my ideas come after I go to bed and lie awake for an hour trying to get my characters to hush!

What is one of your favorite quotes?
“Do it now.” I think many people—including me—tend to think some items on the to-do list seem much more time-consuming or complicated or boring than they actually are. We wait until those items become big, scary monsters waiting to grab us, or worse, turn into a series of crises looming over our heads, rather than tackle them and get them done. Practicing the oh-so-simple “Do it now” principle has helped me many times, and I hope it will help people reading this, too.

Ann: Words to live by. Simple, but so true!

What is your favorite thing to do during your spare time…besides writing?
Snuggle on the couch with my husband while reading and eating something chocolate!

Ann: I vote for more snuggling and chocolate!!

And speaking of chocolate…
Here’s the back cover blurb from A Rancher of Her Own, a Hitching Post Hotel book that may mention chocolate a time or two. The book is available in print and digital, and—as of this writing—it’s on sale for $.99 in digital format at many major e-tailers.

A Rancher of Her Own (The Hitching Post Hotel #2)
A REASON TO STAY
Ranch manager Pete Brannigan has no interest in playing tour guide to a city slicker like Jane Garland. But spending a few days with the headstrong photographer is a small price to pay for everything her grandfather has given the single dad. Though Pete’s drawn to Jane’s sharp wit and striking beauty, he won’t hurt his young children by falling for another woman who puts her career before family.
Jane’s seen the world through her camera…and used it to shield her emotions. With Pete, she can finally let her guard down. If only he could do the same. Despite their powerful bond, Pete still can’t trust Jane with his kids or his heart. But if he keeps pushing her away, he may ruin any chance their relationship has to develop.

Barbara White Daille lives with her husband in the sunny Southwest. Though they love the warm winters and the lizards in their front yard, they haven’t gotten used to the scorpions in the bathroom. Barbara also loves writing, reading, and chocolate. Come to think of it, she enjoys writing about those subjects, too!

Barbara wrote her first short story at the age of nine, then typed “The End” to her first novel many years later…in the eighth grade. Now she’s writing contemporary romance on a daily basis. She’s faced opposition before, but she isn’t prepared for Trent. Her charisma has softened Hollywood’s hardest hearts, but is she a match for Trent’s heart of stone?

Trent’s defenses against Charisse crumble – loving her will heal the darkness in his soul and open the door to a secret he buried long ago. Let’s get to know Laura better through the questions she chose for Five on Friday.

How did you get started writing?
I have always written. I love expressing myself through the written word. I love words! I love word images and word feelings. Language is an amazing gift and words can create amazing feelings and visuals. In high school, I took a creative writing class and knew I had found my niche. My parents, however, directed me toward a more secure career, but I never forgot my love of writing. I have tried off and on over the years to have books published which was so difficult I gave up all hope, but then I discovered self-publishing and that really clicked for me. I was so glad I could actually publish a book the way I wanted.

Ann: Since I am a big supporter of self/indie publishing, I think you made the right choice. Having control over our books is important since we put in all the work!

What genre(s) do you write in and why?
I write romantic suspense because I love romance and I love mysteries. I love strong heroes who know what they want and know how to get it, and I love strong females who can stand against anyone. I especially love it when they stand up to the hero and the dilemma is between saving the day or saving the relationship. Saving the day may be the only choice but then what becomes of the hero and heroine? You have to turn the page to find out.

Ann: I agree. There is nothing better than a good romance with strong characters.

Tell us about your current series.
During the summers, when I was young, my father would take us to the mountain ranch where he grew up. We loved it there. We loved riding horses and fishing and hiking. Those summers were special to us and when I was trying to decide on a series, I thought a ranch would be the perfect setting. I tweaked it a little bit and added the Arabian horse training, and then, of course, each book has romance and mystery.

Ann: Sounds like you had great childhood adventures and those always make for good stories!

What is your next project and when will it be released?
I’m working on two projects right now, which is a little nerve racking. I sent the manuscript for the sixth book in the Crystal Creek series to my editor and received her comments back the other day, so now I’m going through the manuscript trying to decide what I want to change and what I want to keep. I hope to release this book by the end of the summer. I’m also participating in a boxed set with twenty other authors. This boxed set will be released in November. My contribution will be a novella but it will introduce my next series. Also set in Colorado, this series focuses on college graduates as they make their way into the world. I’m very excited about that and can’t wait to release it.

Ann: Boxed sets are so popular right now with two benefits. Readers get a lot of books for little money, and authors get the best opportunity to make the USA Best Seller List…so good luck in that endeavor!

Tell us about your hero. Give us one of his strengths and one of his weaknesses.
Trent Parker came from nothing but was never one to settle. He climbed his way up the Hollywood ladder starting with walk-on parts while he waited tables and shoveled asphalt until he had enough money to form his own production company. At last, he has everything he wants: He owns Hollywood. Every A-list star wants to work for him. But he doesn’t have one thing – the option for the breakout novel, Sunset in Maui. Charisse Whitloch owns that. He’ll do anything to get that option, but the only way to accomplish that is by getting close to Charisse. If he does, it will destroy him.

Ann: Sounds interesting! I’ll be on the lookout for it. Thank you, Laura, for sharing your series with my readers!

BLURB:

A powerful alpha wolf. A gifted witch. Each haunted by death. Can passion drive them to an everlasting love? Or will the enemy forge a hopeless chasm?
Braden should have died in the Graveyard, but the witch, Maeve, saved him. The call of his wolf is on him and he wants her. She can be his alpha-mate. But she has powers that can destroy him and a disrupted memory that holds the answers to his wife’s murder. Can he ever trust a woman who can kill with the power she streams from her bare hands?

Maeve has known only horror, death and destruction since her arrival in Five Bridges as a transformed alter witch. She goes to the Graveyard nightly to rescue those left for dead by the evil rampant in all five territories of her new world. She fears the power she possesses and the gaps in her memory frighten her more than anything else. But when she rescues Braden from an attack in the Graveyard and she realizes she’s drawn to the handsome wolf, the nightmare really begins.

EXCERPT:

Chapter One

The Graveyard was not the place Mark Braden thought he’d breathe his last. He was sure he’d die in the pine forest of Savage Territory, chasing a drug-runner and getting hit by a spray of bullets.

Instead, he’d been ambushed.

He lay face down on the hard, rocky ground. Blood streamed from a deep gash in his skull and pooled in the debris beneath him. The rogue wolves kicked him, but he barely registered the blows anymore. One or two of his ribs had snapped and punctured his left lung. He had a deep stab wound in his abdomen. His heart felt like a bird fluttering wildly in his chest, nothing more.

The Graveyard was a cess-pit, a central place in Five Bridges used for dumping bodies at night. In the morning, Tribunal clean-up crews would arrive to cart off the dead, catalog them with unfailing carelessness, then send them to the crematory.

“He’s gone.” Ely Gammet, a powerful warlock, stood over him. The bastard had been one of six who’d drawn him to the Graveyard with the promise of information about his wife’s killers.

A few more kicks, and the crew started walking away. He had a dim view of their boots and heard the crunch through the loose rocks. Braden flared his nostrils to take in the warlock’s scent. He catalogued it in his shifter brain for future recall.

He almost laughed. What future?

His breaths were shallow now, small jolts of air he brought into lungs that barely worked anymore.

Maybe it was for the best…

Author Info:
Hi, Everyone! Caris Roane here! I’m a NY Times Bestselling Author and I write super-sexy paranormal romance books. With every book I create, my goal is to take you away ~ far, far away ~ from the difficulties and frustrations of your life.
I began my career with Kensington Publishing and wrote Regency Romance as Valerie King. In 2005, Romantic Times Magazine honored me with a career achievement award for my Regency work. To-date, I’ve published eighty-nine books. Thirty-nine of those are paranormal romances, some self-published and some with St. Martin’s Press.
Though my stories conjure up hunky PNR warriors, like vampires and wolf-shifters, the romance is everything, including a satisfying Happily Ever After. My hope is that you’ll become engrossed in the lives of my tortured heroes and my worthy women as they wage war, as they make love, and as they face the tough issues of life and relationships!
I live in the Phoenix area, in the city of Buckeye. When not writing, I’m a real homebody. I love gardening, sewing, and cooking. (Um, cleaning, not so much!) I also enjoy creating jewelry and I frequently offer my handcrafted, PNR bracelet giveaways to my newsletter and blog subscribers. You can sign up for both on my Home Page.
My motto: Live the Fang!
